The Kansas State Wildcats, led by quarterback Avery Johnson, were involved in one of week 7's most entertaining games against quarterback Shedeur Sander's Colorado Buffaloes. The two quarterbacks traded touchdown passes and juggled the lead before Johnson delivered the final blow with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Wildcats star Jayce Brown with 2:14 remaining on the clock.
Johnson showcased his confidence throughout the game. He scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter to level the score and celebrated with coach Deion Sander's iconic shuffle celebration that Sanders made famous in the NFL. Johnson also took a selfie with a fan's phone during the game and registered 224 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
The moment was made even more impressive, given that the Wildcats were on hostile ground at Folsom Field. Although Johnson left the game in the third quarter with an apparent injury, he came back to close out the game with his touchdown pass to Brown.
Thanks to Johnson's efforts, the Wildcats secured a narrow 31-28 win, overcoming a late rally from the dynamic Shedeur Sanders and the Buffs.
During his postgame news conference, Avery Johnson was matter-of-fact when analyzing the big play that he made to retake the lead and win the game for the Kansas State Wildcats.
“Ultimately you’ve just got to make plays in big moments,” Avery Johnson said. “Ultimately, that’s what our guys did.”
Avery Johnson took time off football to prepare for Buffs
Avery Johnson has registered 879 yards resulting in nine touchdowns and four interceptions this season and is leading the Kansas State Wildcats drive for Big 12 glory.
During his weekly news conference, Johnson shared how he prepared for the clash against Colorado.
"The biggest thing was taking some time to step away from football, get a little reset," Johnson said. "After Thursday hit, they gave us off Friday throughout the weekend. So just being able to have a little bit of time away from football, I got to go back home see my grandpa, see some old coaches and friends.
"Got to spend some time with my brother, parents this weekend. So just a little bit of time away from football, to be able to reset and just have that time away so that when I did come back out I was fully ready to go."
Next up for Avery Johnson and the Kansas State Wildcats is a trip to Morgantown and a clash against the West Virginia Mountaineers and a chance to improve to 6-1 and improve their chances of making the conference championship game.
