The Colorado Buffaloes under coach Deion Sanders have played some of the most entertaining games in college football this season. During the Buffs' week 7 clash against the Kansas State Wildcats, an improbable comeback almost unfolded in Boulder but eventually ended in a narrow 31-28 loss.
With 3:51 left on the clock, the Buffs were down 24-21 when freshman cornerback Colton Hood intercepted Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson. He was on the verge of a pick-six before stumbling and falling a few yards away from the end zone.
Although mercurial Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw a touchdown pass to LaJohntay Wester with 3:12 remaining to give his team the lead, the game was far from over.
Deion Sanders will rue the Buffs' loss of concentration as the defense allowed Wildcats running back DJ Giddens to receive a pass under no pressure. On the very next play, Avery Johnson hit Jayce Brown with a 50-yard touchdown pass as the Wildcats retook the lead for the final time.
The Buffs have a 4-2 record (2-1 conference), the same they had last season at the midway point before finishing 4-8. Here's the video of redshirt freshman Colton Hood's interception for the Wildcats:
Deion Sanders pays a steep price in clash against Wildcats
Although it was a valiant effort against the No. 18 Kansas State Wildcats, which the Buffaloes almost won, coach Deion Sanders will be counting the cost of the loss in the number and significance of the injured players after the game.
Two-way star Travis Hunter went down with a shoulder injury in the second quarter and didn't return, allowing Kansas State to score two touchdowns and a field goal that almost put the game past the Buffs.
Next, Deion Sanders lost his best wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. who left in the second quarter with a limp and also remained on the sidelines. Finally, just as the Buffs were applying the pressure on the Wildcats' defense, influential Colorado wide receiver Omarion Miller left with an injury after a 51-yard reception.
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was left battling against a determined Kansas State defense without the weapons to hurt the Wildcats as the Colorado Buffaloes fell just short of delivering a stunning comeback.
Next up for Deion Sanders is a clash with the Arizona State Sun Devils, where they would usually be considered heavy favorites, but things could change without some of their most influential players.
