Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders is preparing for what will be a very important season for him. This will be his final season in college football, and the Buffaloes quarterback is widely predicted to be a first round pick during the 2025 NFL Draft.
On Thursday, an interview with Shedeur Sanders was released where the youngster looked back to where it all started. In an interview in association with JD Sports, the son of Deion Sanders recalled the reason why he decided to pursue a career in football.
"It was in high school sophomore summer. I'd try doing hoops... I was playing mid, and I then I thought I can't have all of these offers and be out here playing trash"
Shedeur Sanders was a highly scouted prospect while in high school, and received offers from many top programs.
He led his high school to three Texas State championships, on a team where Deion Sanders was the offensive coordinator.
However, while he was strong at football, Shedeur Sanders has reported that his basketball abilities were "mid." These lackluster performances on the court in high school, especially when he had received many offers from colleges for his football skills, were the reason why he decided to choose football.
This has appeared to pay off. Sanders has become one of the most talked about quarterbacks in all of college football and is almost singlehandedly carrying the Buffaloes offense.
This, paired with his rap career and his modeling work, has showed that Shedeur Sanders is strong enough to juggle all of this and still have a football career.
Shedeur Sanders has compared himself to two NFL greats after a mock draft
However, as the 2024 college football season approaches, estimates and predictions for the 2025 NFL Draft are being made. This is highly likely to feature Shedeur Sanders, as well as Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers and potentially, Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck.
For an effective mock draft to be done, every aspect of the player needs to be taken into consideration. This includes both their on-field performances and their general reputation away from the field.
The latter may prevent Shedeur Sanders from being taken by some team or as a high pick. Teams may not want to have to deal with all of the off-field drama that Shedeur Sanders may bring.
Early mock drafts have appeared to rank Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck higher than Sanders, mostly for this reason.
Sanders has fired back in response to this by making a bizarre comparison to two NFL greats. He told Complex Sports:
"I'm able to stay in the pocket and want to deliver the ball each and every play like Brady but be able to extend plays and if it's not there, take it like Vick."
Unfortunately, while Shedeur Sanders is a good quarterback, he is currently nowhere near as good as the likes of Tom Brady or Michael Vick.
While this may be an attempt to raise his draft stock ahead of the season by saying that he is like these greats, this may be in vain. It will be up to Sanders on the field to ensure that he will be able to make himself a top 5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
