Former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler ended the long wait between quarterback picks in the 2024 NFL Draft when he was selected No. 150 overall by the New Orleans Saints.
Rattler's draft stock plummeted as he ended up being picked in the fifth round of the draft. NFL analysts drew a line between his draft position and teams reluctant to draft him due to a clip of him on Netflix docuseries "QB1: Beyond the Lights."
In the viral 2018 clip, the divisive Spencer Rattler who was a student at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, blamed his wide receivers for dropping his passes and threw a tantrum because his team lost a practice scrimmage.
Spencer Rattler was the No. 1 ranked player in the class of 2019 by 247Sports after finishing his high school career having thrown for 11,083 yards, resulting in 116 touchdowns.
Football experts have their say on the Spencer Rattler saga
NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, while appearing on the NFL Network, referenced the video as an active issue that NFL franchises used to distance themselves from the former South Carolina Gamecocks QB.
"Spencer Rattler did a reality show in high school ... it did not make him look great and it is unbelievable how many different teams mentioned to me the image in that show and how they can't get it out of their heads," Rapoport said.
Rattler's former coach South Carolina's Shane Beamer quickly came to the defense of his former quarterback on X telling off the media peddling the theory.
"Such a tired , lazy narrative. And bullcrap," Beamer wrote. "None of the NFL teams that called me said that….And any team that thinks that clearly hasn’t done their research. He dealt w adversity at OU in a class way , came to SC , was a great player and was voted by his TEAMMATES as a captain …TWO YEARS IN A ROW. He’s a great person , great player and some team is getting a future starter today."
Rattler ended up being one of the best quarterbacks in college football, spending three years with the Oklahoma Sooners before entering the transfer portal and joining the South Carolina Gamecocks.
He ended up finishing his career with 10,807 yards thrown on 68.5% completion, resulting in 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.
The clip that has brought all the attention to Spencer Rattler and his draft pick was taken six years ago and football fans will now keep a keen eye on the quarterback to see how he adapts to the NFL.
