The iconic ESPN pregame show "College GameDay" has been enriched by retired coach Nick Saban joining its notoriously fractious roster, with more viewers turning in than at any time in the previous seven years. Saban joined the show after retiring from the Alabama Crimson Tide job in January.
Saban has been praised by fans for his forthright and in-depth analysis on the show but it has been his chemistry with fellow co-panelist Pat McAfee that has caught the eye.
During College GameDay's set in Bloomington, Indiana, where the crew had set up for the coach's Week 8 clash against the Washington Huskies, a moment that would have seemed impossible in the past for Saban was caught on camera.
The former Bama coach was caught nodding his head in tune to the hit song "FE!N" by musician Travis Scott in a nod to the influence of McAfee, whom he has credited for widening his pop horizons in the past.
Nick Saban and Pat McGee share a special bond
Nick Saban was a regular on the "Pat McAfee" show even during his tenure as Alabama Crimson Tide's coach. It seems the chemistry has carried over into their working relationship as co-panelists on ESPN's "College GameDay."
There have been several instances of Saban and McAfee going viral, including the former coach being fed a piece of steak by McAfee and dancing on the table while the former Bama coach watched in fascination.
A few weeks ago, during an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show," Nick Saban credited McAfee for helping him work on his acting skills while appearing in a VRBO commercial and for helping him settle into his role on the show.
"Well, you know, Pat’s my idol," Saban said. "He helped me on TV, sitting next to me. And I was trying to be like him on that commercial. You know, the one thing Miss Terry said is I didn’t have to do any acting in that commercial. That’s just the kind of jerk I always am."
"You've (Pat McAfee) made it a lot easier on me, though," Saban added. "Sitting by you makes it easier for me, because I'm less anxious because you are very aggressive in whatever we're talking about and whatever we're doing. I didn't know exactly what word to use there."
With College GameDay favorite Lee Corso regularly missing the beloved show due to his health, Nick Saban and Pat McAfee's effortless chemistry has given the show a new dimension.
