Tennessee Volunteers coach Josh Heupel had a positive SEC Media Days, with his team favored as one of the top contenders in the Southeastern Conference next season. During the event, the SEC Network decided to show Heupel a funny video of ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum's entrance on set during the 2022 clash between the Vols and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In the video, Finebaum is carried onto the set in a Tennessee orange casket by four pallbearers. The analyst then popped out of the casket and predicted that Heupel's team would beat Nick Saban's team in Knoxville, which they did, recording a famous 52-49 victory. Coach Heupel watched the resurfaced clip in bemusement during the event:
"Yeah, I've never seen this clip," Josh Heupel said. "Not sure that I'll ever see anything quite like that. Paul resurrecting himself right out of the casket right there. It's good to see Paul in Tennessee orange."
How Josh Heupel deals with heightened expectations
During an appearance on "Andy Staple's On3" pod from the SEC Media Days, Coach Josh Heupel spoke about how his team is handling the weight of expectations before the upcoming season:
“The expectations outside of the building are never going to be higher than what they are inside of our room. Yeah, and our guys in today’s landscape, you don’t block out the noise. But you can be intentional on what you let live in your headspace, versus moving it out of your headspace.
"For us, this group has been really good at how intentional they are in their work habits. Every single day, on the practice field during spring ball, in the weight room, just the consistency of it, and that’s where success lies. You have long-term goals, dreams, visions. Where you want to get to comes down to being where your feet are, and winning that moment.”
The heightened preseason expectations on coach Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers mean that college football fans will pay closer attention to them, and any slip-ups will be widely scrutinized.
