South Carolina coach Shane Beamer and his Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) were able to upset the Texas A&M Aggies (7-2, 5-1) on Saturday. The win has opened up the race for the SEC Championship game, as the Aggies were the only undefeated team in in-conference play.
After the game, Beamer told his players that it was his wife's birthday next week. He promised her that if they won, he was going to have a "little celebration" for her in the locker room. Beamer delivered on his promise, as a video posted on social media will confirm.
His players joined him in serenading his wife with a song that they sang before practices.
This joyous occasion was also a reward for the big win. It was the first time that they defeated a ranked team all season after coming close to defeating both LSU and Alabama earlier in the season.
Saturday's game was not close, as the Gamecocks were able to easily defeat the Aggies 44-20.
The standout player was LaNorris Sellers. He threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns. He was also strong with his feet, rushing for 106 yards and one TD.
Shane Beamer talked about Sellers in a postgame interview and praised him for his performance:
"He's special," Beamer said. "He's just going to get better... When he had those two losses against LSU and Alabama, he was inexperienced.”
A record-setting win for Shane Beamer
The win had more significance for Beamer than just being a statement win over a ranked opponent. It was his third win against a Top 10 team and pushed him into second place in school history.
The first two were both in 2022 against the Tennessee Volunteers and Clemson Tigers.
While he is now in second place, it could take a while before Beamer reaches the top spot. It is held by Steve Spurrier, who coached the team from 2005 to 2015, with seven wins.
If Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks win all of their remaining games and reach nine wins, they could be in the running to make the College Football Playoff.
