South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley and her team have been back in training after winning the national championship unbeaten last season and visiting the White House. Despite her busy schedule, Staley has been vocal on X about enjoying the 2024 college football season.
Before Shane Beamer's Gamecocks faced off against Kalen DeBoer's Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 7, Staley posted a clip on X of celebrating South Carolina fans with an encouraging message for the football team.
"Let’s goooooo @GamecockFB! We are partying at Market on Main! Keep the heat on the tide!!!" Staley tweeted.
During Week 5 of college football action, Staley was full of praise for Colorado Buffaloes stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter during their 38-31 win over the Baylor Bears, even jokingly asking for the latter's jersey.
A South Carolina fan on X accused Staley of betrayal, and as usual, the outspoken Gamecocks coach had the perfect riposte for the fan.
"I'm sorry I can't like but one team in life?" Staley tweeted. "Keep clocking my post, and I'm sure I'll tweet about another team next week. I enjoy good games, good players, and heck, good players!"
Dawn Staley attempts to rebuild without Kamilla Cardoso
The South Carolina Gamecocks under coach Dawn Staley have rebuilt great teams in the past few years after losing influential players to the WNBA via the draft, and last season's biggest loss was Kamilla Cardoso, who was picked No. 3 overall by the Chicago Sky.
During an interview with CBS Sports, Staley revealed how the Gamecocks would cope with the loss of Cardoso.
"Obviously, she (Cardoso) was big in stature. She was big in personality. She was big in leadership," Staley said. "When you lose someone like that, you hope she left the legacy of leadership, which she has... Our program is next woman up.
"It may not be a single voice, but it's a collection of voices that works for us. It works for us, which is cool because you lose one person and you don't want your program to just go downhill."
One of the underrated stars of last season's team was freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley, who averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists despite starting just three games. She is poised for a breakout year as a sophomore.
Fulwiley has been tabbed as the next big star of South Carolina Gamecocks basketball by none other than Staley, who will attempt to win back-to-back national championships despite losing her best player.
