During the third quarter of the Texas Longhorns game with the Georgia Bulldogs, a controversial decision was made.
The Longhorns had intercepted a pass from Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck and brought the ball down into the Bulldogs' red zone.
However, a defensive pass interference penalty was called on the play, denying the Longhorns of what was a game-changing moment.
The fans inside DKR Stadium were not happy, and threw bottles onto the field in protest.
Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian was seen calling for calm, and wanting the Longhorns fans to stop throwing the bottles into the endzone.
But, while that is how fans reacted in Austin, how did fans react to these events online?
These fans said the penalty was one of the worst they ever seen, and it should have never been given.
"One of the worst calls I’ve ever seen." said this fan
"I want Georgia to win, but that was one of the worst calls I have seen in years." Said another fan
"INSANE CALL -- Commentators are even saying that call could've just ruined the game. And agreed it wasn't a foul." Said a third fan
These fans believe that the referees may have been favoring the Bulldogs over the Longhorns.
"Leave it up to SEC refs to screw Texas and protect Georgia." Said this fan
"UGA getting bailed out🤷♂️" said another fan
"refs been biased towards texas the whole second half, ncaa made the call" said a third fan
These fans reacted to the Longhorns fans throwing bottles onto the field in protest of the play.
"Texas Bottlegate worked" said this fan
"Wild they reverted the call. The fans throwing the bottles on the field delayed it enough to make the referees call that back. If Texas wins it will be because of the fans" said another fan
"Texas fans reaction and rioting led to a reversal, rightfully, that has swung the momentum of this game." Said a third fan
"This is awesome. Never seen refs decide to fix a mistake. Kudos." Said this fan
Why were the Texas Longhorns fans angry and had to be calmed by Steve Sarkisian?
The play in question was a pivotal moment in the game. The Longhorns had been struggling throughout the match, and this interception allowed them to get within one score of the Bulldogs.
However, the defensive pass interference call was controversial.
This is because there is evidence to suggest that both the Bulldogs receiver and the Longhorns defender had contact with eachother while the pass was in the air.
The video further suggests that the Bulldogs made contact first, so if there was a penalty on the play, it should have been for offense pass interference rather than defensive.
Luckily, the call was overturned, and Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue would go onto score a touchdown from it.
