The Texas Longhorns are trying to make it to their first national championship game in 15 years. They will first have to get past the Ohio State Buckeyes, but the school made sure to share a little extra motivation.
The Texas Football social media account posted a hype video ahead of their Cotton Bowl tilt against the Buckeyes. The theme revolves around the fight and strength of those in Texas.
As if it wasn’t clear already, the SEC is also riding with the Longhorns and the conference reposted the video on their official account.
“Don’t mess with Texas. @TexasFootball x #HookEm,” the SEC post read.
The Longhorns are the only remaining team from the SEC in the College Football Playoff despite being in their first year in the conference.
To make it to the CFP semifinals, the Longhorns finished the season with an 11-2 record, with both defeats coming against Georgia (the second one in the SEC Championship Game).
Once the postseason started, Steve Sarkisian's squad beat Clemson at home, 38-24, and Arizona State at the Peach Bowl, 39-31, in double-overtime. The Longhorns appear to be facing their toughest test yet, as Ohio State is coming off dominant victories over Tennessee and previously undefeated Oregon.
The Cotton Bowl will be played tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET in AT&T Stadium. The winner will travel to Atlanta to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the national title on Jan. 20.
Texas got some big news on the injury front
Unlike the Peach Bowl, the Longhorns are expected to have a healthy offensive line, at least as healthy as it can be after 15 games. Right tackle Cameron Williams is expected to play against the Buckeyes after not playing a single down versus Arizona State.
The junior offensive tackle suffered a sprained knee against Clemson and, despite dressing up for the Peach Bowl, he didn’t see any action.
Without Williams, the offense struggled to run the ball off the edge against the Sun Devils. The Longhorns are facing a physical defensive front this Friday, one that includes edge rushers J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer.
The other offensive tackle, Kelvin Banks Jr., is also expected to start. Banks is considered a potential top-5 pick in this year’s NFL Draft but has been nursing an ankle injury.
If the Longhorns expect to win this game, they need to protect Quinn Ewers and create some running lanes. With the tackles making up one of the top pairings in college football, it should make the home fans feel better about their chances against Ohio State.
