On Friday, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers spoke to the media at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana. As the Longhorns prepare for their upcoming season in the SEC a year early, Ewers shared his thoughts on the side's high expectations to play in the new 16-team super league.
"It's definitely a different level I've always wanted to play in the SEC,” Ewers told media. “So, I know we're all excited to be a part of a conference. Like you said, ‘we're everybody's biggest game,’ but we do understand that." [Timestamp - 8:03]
Ewers also discussed their week two matchup against defending champions Michigan and expressed his excitement about playing Texas A&M again.
“Like you said 'defending champs,' it's going to be a great environment [with] a lot of people, it's going to be a good time,” Ewers said. [Timestamp - 5:17]
Looking ahead to 2024, Ewers appreciated the team’s strong foundation and leadership. He said Texas has done a great job setting a standard for the team, including the younger guys.
Quinn Ewers will have another chance to shine
The 2024 SEC schedule for Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns will have games against Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky and Texas A&M. Last season, Texas narrowly missed playing for a national title, losing to Washington in a semifinal game.
In September, Quinn Ewers led the Longhorns, then ranked No. 11, to a 34-24 upset win over the No. 2 Alabama team in Tuscaloosa. Ewers threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns, showing he can handle tough road games.
“Football definitely means a lot for that conference,” Ewers said at Manning Passing Academy. “We’re going into it full speed. We want to win the SEC Championship, and we want to accomplish what we were so close to accomplishing last year. I know that we have a team that’s more than capable of doing that.”
He'll have another chance to shine when the Longhorns play the Wolverines at 11 am CT on FOX on September 7 in Ann Arbor.
