Last week, former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick emerged as a contender to replace Mack Brown as coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. The legendary coach interviewed with the ACC program, although he was among a host of names being considered for the job.

On Monday during an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show", Belichick was asked about his interest in the Tar Heels job and he had a cryptic answer.

"We'll see how that goes," Belichick said. "We'll see. We'll see."

College football fans had mixed reactions to Belichick's cryptic quote.

Some fans were pessimistic about the possibility of UNC pulling the hire off or even retaining the coach should it happen.

"We won’t get him," one fan tweeted.
"He’ll prob coach a year just to hand over gig to his son but interesting story," another fan tweeted.
"He does not need to be coaching at 72 years old," another fan tweeted.

Bill Belichick makes pitch to recruits amid UNC rumors

During his Monday appearance on the "Pat McAfee" show, Belichick even made a subtle sales pitch to potential recruits by promising them a pipeline to the NFL utilizing his contacts to make that happen. He dangled the possibility of making any potential program he landed at more like the pros than college football.

"Let me put this in capital letters, if, 'I.F.' I was in a college program, that college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for players that had ability to play in the NFL," Belichick said. "It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques, that would transfer to the NFL. It will be an NFL program at a college level.
"I feel very confident that I have the contacts in the NFL to pave the way for those players that would have the opportunity to compete in the National Football League."

Bill Belichick does not have any college football experience, although his son Stephen Belichick is the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies while his father coached both the Navy Midshipmen and the Vanderbilt Commodores.

"I did grow up around [college football]," Bill Belichick said. "My dad was a college coach who was at North Carolina for three years, Vanderbilt for a year and then Navy for 50. It seems college football is more like pro football. I've talked to a lot of college coaches about things like salary cap and putting value on players and negotiating. ... I think there are similarities. I haven't experienced it firsthand."

College football and NFL fans must now wait to see if Belichick continues to gain traction for the North Carolina job.
