Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter had a stellar performance in the Buffaloes' 34-23 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats in Week 9. He tallied 153 yards on nine receptions, resulting in two touchdowns, and added two tackles and four pass deflections on the defensive side of the ball.
For his efforts, Hunter was named both the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, the first time in conference history that a player has managed such a feat.
During this week's episode of the "Pat McAfee Show," ESPN analyst Pat McAfee broke down how lucky Hunter was to play for a coach like Deion Sanders, who lets him play on both sides of the ball, fueling his race for the coveted Heisman Trophy.
"Whenever I bring up a few weeks ago to Coach Prime on 'GameDay' that Travis Hunter had the second best odds for the Heisman, he goes, 'Hunter at No. 2, that doesn't make sense to me, what are you saying?''" McAfee said. "I'm like, 'I don't make these odds, I'm not sports book, it would be very cool if I was.'
"He goes on a promo about Travis Hunter, 'All ball, doesn't drink, he streams, he has a show and has an incredible personality.' It's like this guy is obviously Heisman-worthy, great for football. We are very lucky that Hunter went to Colorado with Coach Prime and has been allowed to do this. There's a lot of coaches who would be like, you gotta be one or the other."
This season, Travis Hunter has registered 757 yards on 60 receptions, resulting in eight touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball while adding two interceptions, a forced fumble and seven pass breakups on the defensive side.
An ESPN report this week declared the Buffs star as the outright favorite for the Heisman Trophy over competitors, Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty.
Travis Hunter gets Heisman hype from a national champion coach
During an episode of the "Triple Option" podcast, former Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer was full of praise for Hunter, terming him the best player in college football while fronting him for the Heisman Trophy.
"The Heisman, the way — every year you have that argument," Meyer said. "Is it the best player on the best team? Is it a quarterback? The Heisman is for the best player in college football and I really think this guy — those guys are really good — I just think he’s just a little bit better than all of them. Matter of fact, he’s better and it’s Travis Hunter.
"He’s the best player in the game right now. I would draft him with the first pick. This is after now I’ve researched what kind of person he is too."
With the college football season entering its homestretch, Hunter has clung impressively onto the leading pack for the Heisman Trophy, making it likely that he will be on the podium in New York come December.
