The Big 12 has been one of the major talking points of the college football offseason. With the incoming additions of the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, Colorado Buffaloes and Utah Utes, the conference is looking to compete with the SEC and Big Ten for supremacy.
In his address on Day 1 of the Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday, commissioner Brett Yormark explained how he feels about where the conference is going.
"We are truly a national conference...and all eyes are now on the Big 12 for all the right reasons," Yormark said. "I think it is safe to say we are more relevant now than ever before."
There is a lot of excitement surrounding the Big 12 and its new additions. Many observers believe 2024 will be a thrilling season of college football in the conference, and with realignment still happening, it can be the beginning of the dominance that Brett Yormark can display for the league.
What teams can Big 12 commisioner Brett Yormark target in next wave of conference realignment?
The Big 12 has made a lot of noise in conference realignment over the previous two years. However, the conference may continue to grow, as Brett Yormark did not necessarily rule out the idea of adding more teams to the league.
Depending on what happens to the Atlantic Coast Conference in their legal battle with both the Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers, they can be in the running for additions to the Big 12.
However, one school that should be the primary target is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The school is looking for more money for its media rights, and the Big 12 is one of the few places that can offer more.
The Fighting Irish are partial members of the ACC but fit a lot better in a conference like the Big 12. They have not had any reports of wanting to forego their independent status, but for the right price, anything and everything should be on the table.
While it is not a guarantee that Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark will be in acquisition mode or that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to be interested, this would be a great pairing for both sides nonetheless.
