West Virginia is set to have a new look when they come up against No. 11 Iowa State in Week 7. The program announced last week that the game against the Cyclones will be played in their unique and popular “Coal Rush" uniform.
The Mountaineers encouraged fans to come to the game dressed in black to create a "blackout" atmosphere at Milan Puskar Stadium. The theme aims to showcase unity and energy from the home crowd, adding an extra intensity to the matchup.
The "coal rush" uniform pays homage to the state of West Virginia’s coal mining heritage and celebrates its coal industry. It was specifically designed as a tribute to coal miners for their dedication and bravery.
"In developing our new uniforms, it was important for us to incorporate our rich history and tradition with modern technology,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said via WVU Sports after the jersey's launch in April.
“We also wanted people instantly to recognize that the West Virginia Mountaineers were playing. I believe our design team and equipment staff along with our partners at Nike did a great job with these uniforms," he added.
“Coal rush” uniform could inspire West Virginia to win against Iowa State
Aside from its visible aesthetic, there's a lot of history and culture that comes along with West Virginia's coal rush uniform. This could inspire the Mountaineers to a victory on Saturday.
Iowa State has been impressive this season, having won all five of its games so far. The Hawkeyes’ performance has seen them climb up to No. 11 on the AP Poll and a win can help elevate them to the top 10.
“We went into the past and brought back some of the best parts of our uniform history that have made this football program so special," WVU coach Neal Brown said. "We have truly mixed tradition and modern technology in the new uniforms.
“We have plenty of combinations to choose from each week and our players are excited for the new look. The key though is no matter the pants or the jersey, fans will know it's the West Virginia Mountaineers on the football field," he added.
The Mountaineers boast a 3-2 record ahead of the game against Iowa State. However, they've won both games in conference play so far this season. The Hawkeyes will be a great test this weekend as Neal Brown’s team hopes to better their 9-4 record from the 2023 college football season.
