In a first half dominated by the Chippewas, Central Michigan scored the lone points of each quarter, with their first touchdown coming 10 minutes into the game after a six-yard touchdown run from B.J. Harris to take a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.
After a quarter-long scoring drought, the Chippewas kicked a 36-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the first half. Central Michigan forced a Broncos punt and capitalized with a 47-yard field goal to take a 13-0 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Western Michigan bounced back after a scoreless first half, posting the only points of the third quarter with a 78-yard interception return resulting in a touchdown, cutting the lead to 13-7. Central Michigan answered with a 30-yard field goal, extending their lead to 16-7.
The Broncos carried their momentum offensively with a 14-play, 76-yard touchdown drive capped off by a one-yard Jalen Buckley rush, bringing the score to 16-14 at the halfway point of the fourth quarter.
The Chippewas were able to hold Western Michigan scoreless to clinch a 16-14 upset win over the Broncos in the end.
