West Virginia senior defensive back Aubrey Burks left the game against the Kansas Jayhawks in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury. Burks did not go down during a play but was seen on the sideline, where a neck brace was placed on him before he was carted off the field.
The ESPN sideline reporter announced that Burks was transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital for further examination.
What happened to Aubrey Burks?

It is not clear how or when Aubrey Burks was injured. After an innocuous play, he went to the sideline. He was seen with a neck brace on the sideline and was then placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance.
During the broadcast, ESPN's Lauren Sisler gave the following update:
“They’ve cleared the benches. … He looked to be in a lot of pain and struggling to move some of his extremities."
“It’s interesting because after that play, he came off the field, everything seemed fine and he was on the sideline. Suddenly, something wasn’t right. Something didn’t feel right."
The good news is that following the 32-28 win, Burks was seen on the field celebrating with his teammates. Reporter Ryan Decker took to X to share:
"Seeing Aubrey Burks on the field while #WVU sang Country Roads was the perfect ending to this game, given what happened earlier. Having him take my camera was icing on the cake. Glad #2 seems alright!"
After the game, West Virginia coach Neal Brown gave a positive update on the situation while speaking to reporters:
"He's in good spirits, and all the tests were clear, so very thankful on that."
While there have been very few updates on the situation, Burks' status will be something to keep an eye on in the coming week. The Mountaineers' next game is against Oklahoma State on Oct. 5, and West Virginia will be thankful for the break.
