The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have an easy way to make the college football playoffs in the new expanded format. As an independent program, they cannot win a conference championship, all they need to be is ranked in the top 12 to secure a spot in the playoffs.
One prominent figure discussing the playoff chances for the Fighting Irish is Tim Waltz, the Governor of Minnesota, who is Kamala Harris' Vice President pick in the upcoming presidential election. During Tuesday's appearance on Jessica Smetana's segment on "The Dan Le Batard Show," Walz said:
"When doesn't Notre Dame get in? Even the years we know they're not going to get in, they get in."
As of week 10 of the season, the Fighting Irish boast a 7-1 record, having recorded a dominant 51-14 win over the then-undefeated Navy Midshipmen on Saturday.
Despite entering this weekend ranked eighth in the AP Poll, there are questions about where Notre Dame could be in the CFP poll. This poll, which determines playoff selections, is decided by a small committee, unlike the AP Poll, which is chosen by a group of journalists.
With numerous one-loss teams in college football this season, the committee will face the challenging task of deciding which teams are worthy of a spot in the 12-team Playoff.
A good way to compare similar loss teams is to look at the team they lost to. This method does not help Notre Dame, as they infamously lost to the Northern Illinois Huskies (a team from the MAC) earlier in the season.
The Fighting Irish are likely to be competing against one loss teams from the SEC and Big Ten for playoff spots.
As these teams would have likely lost to fellow conference members (who are on par or potentially stronger than them), Notre Dame is going to have to hope the committee overlooks their loss to Northern Illinois and instead focuses on their big wins.
What do the Bookmakers say about Notre Dame's playoff chances?
The Bookmakers have also given their verdict on whether Notre Dame is likely to make the college football playoffs this season.
According to Fanduel, the Fighting Irish will be able to make it into the playoffs, alongside the expected collection of Big Ten and SEC programs.
FanDuel has also said that it will be the Boise State Broncos who will be the Group of Five getting the automatic bye into the second round.
