The Red River Rivalry game between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners is one of the biggest games in every College Football season. They have met regularly since 1929 and will meet during the second week of October 2024.
This year's installment of the Red River Rivalry will be played as an SEC game for the first time in history. But, while some things may be different, other things, like where the game is held, remain the same.
Where is the Red River Rivalry played?
The Red River Rivalry is played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas during the Texas State Fair.
Unlike many other rivalry games between schools, the stadium does not change and is held at a neutral site.
Why is the Red River Rivalry held at the Cotton Bowl?
The Red River Rivalry is held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas due to its location. It is seen as halfway between Norman, Oklahoma (the home of the Oklahoma Sooners) and Austin, Texas (the home of the Texas Longhorns)
As for which team is seen as the home team for each game, in years ending in an odd number it is the Longhorns, while in even years it is the Sooners.
However, the home-field advantage for the game is minimal. This is due to the tickets being split 50-50 for each fan base, creating a memorable sight of Red and Burnt Orange covering the stadium.
When will Red River be played this year?
The 2024 edition of the Red River Rivalry will be held on October 12. However, while that is its traditional date, there is one thing that will be different from previous years.
Traditionally, the game between the Longhorns and the Sooners kicks off at 11 am local time (12 pm Eastern). But this year, the game will depart from the usual time to start at 2:30 p.m.
Texas and Oklahoma form going into Red River
Coming into this, the Texas Longhorns will have a 5-0 record. They have been one of the best teams in college football, and for the last two weeks have been the top-ranked side in the country.
On the other hand, the Oklahoma Sooners have a 4-1 record. While they started well against their nonconference opponents, the moment they entered SEC play, they struggled offensively. They will hope quarterback Jackson Arnold will be able to deliver against one of their biggest rivals.
