The Texas Longhorns will be accompanied by an iconic part of the program during their trip to the Cotton Bowl.
Watching on the sidelines as the Longhorns face the Ohio State Buckeyes will be Bevo, the program's live mascot.
Here is how college football fans reacted to the news that the iconic cow will be at the Cotton Bowl.
These fans are happy that Bevo will be present.
"BEVO! I love him! Let’s go Longhorns! #HookEm ," this fan said.
"Yay Bevo!! Let's Go Horns!!" another fan said.
"Welcome back king! 🙏🏾" a third fan said.
These fans are not surprised that Bevo will return during the Cotton Bowl game.
"No suprise here. Bevo is free. Victory awaits. #HookEm," this fan said.
"I’m not shocked it’s Texas where football is actually appreciated to the very max 😎," another fan said.
"You can count on Texas. Lfg," a third fan said.
This fan is less enthusiastic about the return of Bevo.
"Who cares," the fan said.
While this fan has brought up an interesting point concerning Bevo if the Longhorns make it to the National Championship game.
"Unfortunately when we get to the national championship game, yet again they will not allow him to be on the field," the fan said.
Why was Bevo not at the Peach Bowl with Texas?
Bevo is a usual presence at Texas games, but was not in Atlanta for the team's double overtime victory against the Arizona State Sun Devils. This also occurred when the Longhorns made the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, which was held at the same stadium.
In a statement, the organizers of the Peach Bowl gave their reason for the absence of the Longhorns mascot.
"We love all of the traditions of college football, and no doubt, Bevo is one of the best, but the unfortunate reality is there simply is not enough room on the sidelines of Mercedes-Benz Stadium."
Live mascots are a historic college football tradition. However, Bevo is very much different from a lot of the other live mascots. The majority of these are dogs who do not need a lot of space to be on the sidelines.
Bevo, being a Texas Longhorn breed of cattle, obviously needs a lot more space to comfortably be on the sidelines. This is before one accounts for the handlers (The Silver Spurs), media, and all of the other things needed to keep the animal safe.
This is something that Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which hosted the Peach Bowl (and will host the national championship), does not have, hence why he was not at the game.
