For the 2024 college football season, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a prodigal son on their roster. In late December of 2023, the Fighting Irish obtained the services of Super Bowl-winning safety Ryan Clark's son, Jordan Clark.
Jordan Clark's arrival has excited many Notre Dame fans. But who is he, and will he be anything like his father on the field?
Who is Jordan Clark?
Jordan Clark is the son of former NFL safety Ryan Clark, who won the Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009. Clark plays, like his father, as a safety.
Jordan has spent the last five seasons with the Arizona State Sun Devils, where his numbers have increased, as he has played more and developed as a player. During the 2023 season, Clark recorded 30 solo tackles and was involved in 20 assisted tackles. That total of 50 tackles is his career high, and Jordan was a key part of a Sun Devils defense that struggled.
His long career in college football is partly down to the 2020 season not counting toward his years of eligibility due to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, but 2024 will be his final season in college football.
For this, Jordan Clark has decided to leave Arizona State behind and transfer to Notre Dame, a program that had the best pass defense in the country last season. On what he hopes to get out of his transfer to the Fighting Irish, Clark told On3.com:
“I’m going to play in an NFL defense surrounded by some of the best players in the country. Being coached by guys whose attention-to-detail is second-to-none in a building where everybody is dead set on not just getting to the Playoff, but winning.”
What does Ryan Clark think about his son's decision?
Jordan Clark hopes to have his name called in the NFL draft, but Ryan Clark didn't have that opportunity. The New York Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2002.
In New York, he worked his way up and eventually won the Super Bowl.
On his son's decision to play for the Fighting Irish, Ryan told 247 Sports:
"I let Jordan make his own decision, He had the opportunity to talk with all of the coaches there. Sit with Marcus (Freeman) , sit with Al, sit with 'CO', at the time. I think he just enjoyed his time there"
Ryan Clark also told 247 Sports that his son is now playing for his dream school, and he thinks Jordan will be able to develop into an NFL-standard player with the Fighting Irish.
"Notre Dame was actually my dream school growing up, so I was excited for Jordan. But he had to make his own decision. His decision was based purely on football. That's the blessing of having a dad who played professionally, who still does well, we don't have NIL conversations. Our conversations are, is this the best place for you to grow as a man and as a football player. That's what it was."
Jordan Clark will shortly begin his final season in college with a new team, but he is in a strong position to help them succeed and earn his chance in the NFL.
