Former Auburn Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall found himself in trouble, as he was arrested last week in Columbus, Georgia.
He played collegiate football for Georgia, Garden City Community College, and Auburn, before declaring himself for the 2015 NFL draft.
In that draft, Marshall was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. After being released in 2016, he was signed by the New York Jets, who also waived him following a four-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. The 31-year-old has been playing in the Canadian Football League since 2018.
Why was Nick Marshall arrested?
As per WRBL who broke the news, police officials stopped Nick Marshall while he was driving his car down 35th Street and River Road. They recovered a modified automatic handgun from the player. This led to him and Lanequa Breshay Borders, who was with him in the car, being charged with gun possession felony.
As Marshall awaits his trial, his team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, made a statement to CTV News, saying that they learned about the arrest through media outlets on Sunday.
"The club is disappointed and taking this matter seriously. We are currently gathering more information and will provide an update soon after," the statement read.
After signing with the Roughriders to play in the CFL in 2018, Marshall started his journey as a starting cornerback. Prior to his arrest, he was still playing for the team and was an active player on the roster.
Nick Marshall's collegiate career
In 2011. Marshall joined the Georgia Bulldogs as a cornerback. However, he was dismissed from the team soon after along with another teammate for violating some unspecified team rules.
The 31-year-old then decided to change his position to quarterback and transferred to the Garden City Community College, becoming the starting QB in 2012. He played one season and went on to put up 3,142 passing yards and 18 TD passes, leading the team to a 7-4 overall record.
A year later, Marshall joined the Auburn Tigers, where he was in a four-man race for the starting quarterback position under then-head coach Gus Malzahn's revamped offense. But the reason why Auburn fans remember Marshall is because of the 'Prayer at Jordan-Hare' moment in the 2013 season.
This took place during Auburn's game against Georgia in the Deep South's Oldest rivalry game. In the dying seconds of the final quarter, when the Tigers were losing 38-37, Nick Marshall threw a 73-yard pass to WR Ricardo Louis. The ball was accidentally tipped by Georgia's Josh Harvey-Clemons and Tray Matthews, which led to Louis catching the ball and scoring the game-winning touchdown.
