Michigan Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore has given an update on star cornerback Will Johnson. Johnson suffered an injury against USC and didn't play against Minnesota.
As Michigan goes on the road to play Washington on Saturday, Moore says Johnson is trending in the right direction to return to the lineup.
"Yeah, they're all working through something," Moore said on Monday, via SI. "Myles is working through something, came out the game. Probably could have went back in, but held him out. And Josaiah and Will look like they'll be in good shape for this week."
Johnson warmed up and suited up against Minnesota but did not play due to the injury. Luckily for Michigan, Johnson appears healthy enough to play in the Wolverines' Week 6 game against Washington.
Johnson has recorded 11 tackles, three passes defended and two interceptions — both were pick-sixes.
Will Johnson is a leader for Michigan's defense
Johnson is the star player for the Michigan Wolverines' defense.
He is projected as a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and with all the changes to the Wolverines defense, he has taken over a leadership role.
"I’m going to keep being myself at the end of the day. I’m somebody that prefers to lead by example, but I’ll speak up when I need to speak. I want to bring along the young guys that need help," Johnson said to TheDraftNetwork.
"Whenever a teammate of mine is seeking information, I’m going to be there for them. I want to be that teammate that is always supportive. I want to help keep that same sense of togetherness that we had last season. I’ve been focusing on being the true leader of this team," he added.
Johnson has been the leader for the Wolverines defense, which is the focal point for Michigan this season. Despite all the changes, Johnson said the goal is to still beat Ohio State and win another national championship.
"The goal is to always beat Michigan State and Ohio State (laughs). We want to win another Big Ten Championship and another National Championship. Those are our goals every single year. We have high expectations at Michigan," Johnson added.
The Michigan Wolverines are off to a 4-1 start and will go on the road to play Washington on Saturday at 7:30 pm ET. Michigan's lone loss came to Texas at home in Week 2.
