The Wisconsin Badgers will have a new quarterback in 2024. In 2023, the Badgers had Tanner Mordecai, who was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent.
After losing their starter, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell was active in the transfer portal, landing one of the top quarterbacks available in Tyler Van Dyke. Here's a look at who will be the Badgers starting quarterback in 2024.
Who will be Luke Fickell's QB1 at Wisconsin in 2024?
Tyler Van Dyke is projected to be the Wisconsin Badgers starting quarterback in 2024.
Although Van Dyke is competing for the starting job, he is the favorite to win the role. Fickell has also praised Van Dyke for his experience and being able to overcome adversity.
"Well, obviously experience," Fickell said during an appearance on OutKick's "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich" (via FoxNews). "I like when guys — not just experience in what he's done at Miami — I love a guy that's had the ups and has had the downs.
"He's been the starter for two years. He's maybe got benched of some sort or he had some turmoil and didn't play as much, and then he came back in and played. Those experiences, for me, are what I believe give him the best opportunity to come in here and lead."
Last season at Miami, Van Dyke went 219-for-333 for 2,703 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Wisconsin's QB depth chart
Behind Van Dyke is returning quarterback Braedyn Locke, who is competing for the starting job. Locke went 76-for-152 for 777 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Locke was a three-star prospect coming out of high school.
Behind Locke is freshman Mabrey Mettauer, a four-star prospect in the class of 2023. He was the 52nd-ranked quarterback and is from Texas.
The fourth-string quarterback is Cole LaCrue, who was a three-star recruit in the class of 2023.
The Badgers will open the 2024 season on August 30 against Western Michigan. Wisconsin has important games Alabama, USC, Purdue, Penn State, Oregon, Iowa, and Nebraska.
