The Wisconsin Badgers are still fighting for Bowl game eligibility this season. Last season, head coach Luck Fickell helped the team to a 7-6 campaign but failed to win the ReliaQuest Bowl game against LSU.

The Badgers are fighting for redemption this season. Unfortunately, they have only managed a 5-5 (3-4 Big Ten Conference) campaign so far. Week 12 saw them lose to the Oregon Ducks, prompting Fickell to fire his offensive coordinator Phil Longo.

Why was Wisconsin OC Phil Longo fired?

According to the statement that Luke Fickell published, the Badgers' offense was not performing according to the standard that they had established for themselves. Thus, Longo's departure was necessary for the program to make the required changes and make a comeback.

"This morning, I informed Phil Longo that he will no longer serve as our offensive coordinator," Fickell said in the statement via @On3sports on X. "After continuing to evaluate the program, I decided we are now where we need to be and believe this decision is in the best interest of the team."
"I appreciate Phil's commitment to helping us build our program over the past two seasons and wish him well moving forward. This team still has a lot in front of us and I am committed to doing everything we can to close out the season with success," he added.

Wisconsin's offense has been disappointing this season. They are ranked 97th nationally in scoring offense (23.9 points) and are ranked 91st in the country in total offense (363.1 yards per game). These underwhelming stats have affected their performance on the field and they are currently battling a three-game losing streak.

Phil Longo spent two seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, coaching for a total of 23 games. Despite his best efforts to polish an air raid offense for the team with Luke Fickell, the plan didn't simply work out in their favor. The head coach has not yet revealed who will take over as the offensive coordinator of the team after Longo's departure.

Who will Wisconsin face next?

After their loss to the Oregon Ducks in Week 12, the Badgers now have just two games remaining to qualify for this season's Bowl games. They are next scheduled to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, November 23.

The Badgers and the Cornhuskers showdown will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET. It will be hosted at Memorial Stadium, the home field of Nebraska. Fickell and his team's regular season will come to an end after taking on the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It will be interesting to see if they can qualify for the Bowl games this year.
