Both defenses stymied the opposing offenses, and the first quarter came and went without a score. Northwestern defensive back Coco Azema grabbed an interception in the opening period, but the team's offense couldn't capitalize. The Wildcats managed to push the ball into field goal range, but they didn't convert, as Luke Akers missed a 51-yard field goal.
The Badgers notched the first points of the game in the opening seconds of the second quarter, capping off an eight-play, 66-yard drive with an eight-yard rushing touchdown from Braedyn Locke. Northwestern looked to respond, taking the ball 65 yards in 11 plays on their next drive, but were forced to settle for a field goal. Wisconsin turned the Wildcats away again, blocking the kick attempt to keep the score at 7-0 with eight minutes left in the quarter.
After forcing a fumble with under a minute left in the first half, Wisconsin punched in another touchdown off a Cade Yucamelli three-yard rush to extend their lead to 14-0 going into halftime.
Northwestern mustered their first game points with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter as Luke Akers drilled a 28-yard field goal, cutting Wisconsin’s lead to 14-3. The Badgers quickly reinforced their lead with a touchdown to cap off an eight-play, 80-yard drive, ending the third quarter with a 21-3 lead. Wisconsin’s defense continued to get after the Wildcats’ offense, forcing a safety to extend their lead to 23-3 in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
