The college football playoff is eight days away, and as a result, there is a lot of time for insiders and analysts to discuss which teams will go on deep runs. Former college head coach Urban Meyer who won two National Championships with Florida in 2006 and 2008, and one with Ohio State in 2014, is one of the three hosts of 'The Triple Option,' a weekly show on Fox.
On the show on Thursday, Urban Meyer and his co-hosts discussed the upcoming College Football Playoff and the favorites to win the National Championship. Meyer was asked if Oregon is his favorite along with being the betting favorite (+375 according to BetMGM) (discussion starts at 1:52). He said:
"They are, I think they're the fastest team in the country. I think they lost a little gas in the second half against Penn State but when they're on all cylinders, they're the best team in the country. They're the best and most balanced team offensively and defensively right now, and they're playing at a high level. That's my favorite."
The No. 1-ranked Oregon Ducks (13-0) remained undefeated, defeating No. 4-ranked Penn State 45-37 in the Big 10 Championship Game on Saturday. Despite, allowing the Nittany Lions to score 13 points in the fourth quarter, they held on to win the championship. As a result, they have a bye through the first round of the playoff.
Urban Meyer discusses an underdog he thinks could go on a run
After Urban Meyer discussed Oregon as the National Championship favorite, he looked at the betting odds to discuss the underdogs. He had a few teams in mind that could go on deep runs and contend with Oregon (starts at 2:14):
"I'm staring at Ohio State and Texas that have two of the best rosters in college football. You know, Ohio State, Coach Day and that staff gotta rebound from that excruciating loss against the Wolverines, and Texas the way they lost against Georgia. So, you know, I know I got to pick one dog and it's Texas or Ohio State and maybe next week I'll pick one."
So, while Urban Meyer believes both the Buckeyes and Longhorns have two of the best rosters in the country, he mentioned that both need to rebound from losses. Neither will have a bye through the first round, so he is not committing to either as his top underdog. However, he said he would consider picking one next week before the first games start.
