The Travis Hunter Heisman Trophy hype has gone into overdrive even after the Colorado Buffaloes' regular season came to an end with no conference championship game appearance. According to BetMGM, Hunter is priced at -10,000 to win the prestigious award, far ahead of his main rival, Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty (+3,000).
On Thursday during the Pat McAfee show, Hunter was the subject of a subtle snub from the Oregon Duck, who made an appearance on the popular show. The duck endorsed Jeanty for the Heisman and handed McAfee a piece of paper with a controversial message aimed at Hunter.
"Snaps ain't a stat though," the Oregon Duck wrote.
Coach Prime's eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., replied to the controversial clip on X with a blunt message to Oregon, who demolished Colorado 42-6 during the 2023 season.
"Yall are the #1 in the nation & yall whooped our ass last year… why tf is bro on there worried about us? Sh*t weird as hell," Deion Sanders Jr. tweeted.
The Travis Hunter Heisman campaign goes into overdrive
With the Heisman campaign entering its homestretch, Travis Hunter has found supporters in both the NBA and the NFL. On Thursday, the Denver Nuggets posted a picture of star DeAndre Jordan donning a Hunter 'He12man' t-shirt before training with the simple caption:
"HE12MAN."
Further afield, the popular Hunter got support from Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II and wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who both wore the Hunter 'He12man' t-shirt to warm up before their team defeated the Cleveland Browns 41-32.
During his postgame news conference, Sutton gave the Heisman-contending Buffs star a ringing endorsement of his Heisman credentials.
“To see Travis Hunter doing what he’s been doing at Colorado, I mean, the kid is special,” Sutton said. “He is the epitome of an athlete. Shoot, he goes out there and plays 120 snaps a game offensively and defensively, and he thrives on both sides of the ball. It’s fun to watch him play. Whenever they play, it’s like, ‘Alright, what did Travis Hunter do today? How many touchdowns did he have? How many interceptions did he have?”
Sutton further revealed that the 2024 Heisman race pitting Hunter against his leading contender, Boise State Broncos running back Jeanty, has gripped even NFL veterans.
“We have debates about this all the time in the locker room: Who’s going to win the Heisman?" Sutton said. "It’s just really hard to take it away from a guy who has been dominant — not just playing both sides of the ball, but has been dominant on both sides of the ball."
With conference championship weekend approaching, Jeanty has one more chance to sway voters before voting closes for the Heisman Trophy. He will have the advantage of having the stage to himself as Hunter could not lead the Colorado Buffaloes to the Big 12 conference championship game.
