The Alamo Bowl game witnessed a record viewership as Colorado squared up against conference rival BYU in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday night. Deion Sanders Jr. was surprised when he saw how many viewers witnessed the bowl game live on television.
According to reports, eight million viewers across the United States caught up with the game on television as it happened before a sell-out crowd at Alamodome. This beat the previous viewership record in the bowl game, which is 7.8 million.
“Damn… 8 million people saw us get clapped,” Sanders wrote on Tuesday.
However, his reaction was misunderstood by some fans who felt it was a flex about the growing influence of Colorado in college football. With the Buffaloes getting blown out 36-14 by the Cougars in the encounter, a section of the fans felt there was nothing to be boastful about.
“Love what y’all are doing at CU, but this is DEFINITELY not the flex you think it is after getting smoked in the game…,” a fan wrote.
Nonetheless, Sanders couldn't comprehend the fan's opinion about being boastful amid the disappointing loss in the Alamo Bowl.
“The flex? Yall are weird as hell bro… wtf are u talking about,” Sanders replied.
What the viewership record means for Colorado and the Alamo Bowl
Colorado has commanded the spotlight since the university athletic department made the bold step of hiring Deion Sanders as its coach ahead of the 2023 season.
Before Coach Prime arrived in Boulder, the program faced significant struggles. However, in just two years, Sanders has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround.
The growing influence of the Buffs was crucial to the new viewership record. The new record marks a significant milestone beyond the bowl game itself. It has the highest viewership for a non-College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six bowl game in over three years.
The previous benchmark was set during the 2020 Citrus Bowl, which featured a high-profile showdown between Alabama and Michigan.
