Following his struggles against Texas in Week 2, Davis Warren isn’t having a good day in the office once again in Week 3. The quarterback won the Michigan starting job ahead of Alex Orji, who was widely expected to start. Yet, Warren hasn't impressed many fans three games into the season.
At the end of the third quarter against Arkansas State, Warren has already thrown three interceptions, showing how much he’s struggling in the backfield. This continues to raise a lot of concern in Ann Arbor as Michigan aims to defend the national title it won last season.
The Wolverines have struggled to find a worthy replacement for J.J. McCarthy, who is now in the NFL, at the quarterback role. Warren's performance so far against the Red Wolves has led to a lot of reactions from Michigan football fans, who haven't forgotten how Week 2 went.
Here's a look at some of the reactions online:
Other reactions to Davis Warren's performance are given below:
"It’s okay to just say Davis Warren has no business starting at Michigan," a fan wrote.
"Davis Warren can’t be QB anymore. Running game and blocking looks a lot better," another fan wrote.
"Davis Warren seems like a great kid, but he’s an awful QB. No way this team makes the playoff with him under center," a fan commented.
"Davis Warren is good, he just needs to clean up the interceptions, kid can spin it with time," another fan commented.
Urban Meyer advises playing both Davis Warren and Alex Orji
Just before the start of the 2024 season, when there was uncertainty in Michigan's quarterback situation, Urban Meyer offered some advice. The former coach suggested a two-quarterback system for the Wolverines, likening the situation to what he had at Florida.
“I’d play them both,” Meyer said. “When I was the head coach of Florida, we had Chris Leak and Tim Tebow. And, I would have our coaches rank the players — top 15 in a row. If you’re in the top 11, you’re playing. Tim Tebow was always in the top 11, so he’s going to play.
“Alex Orji — how do you not play this cat? He’s 235 pounds. I think he’s as good a runner, athlete, as they have. He’s got to play. So, don’t tell me about the scheme. Tell me how you get this kid the ball. He’s got to carry the ball for the Wolverines.”
Following Warren's performance against Arkansas State which led him to the bench in the fourth quarter, it appears Alex Orji might be getting some game time this season. It’s, however, unknown whether Orji will be given the starting role in Week 4 against USC.
In the first two games, Warren threw for 322 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Wolverines. He also completed 11 of 14 passes for 122 yards before he was substituted. The quarterback has so far thrown five interceptions in three games this season.
