Travis Hunter transferred to Colorado from Jackson State along with Deion Sanders and his sons ahead of the 2023 season. The two-way star had an impressive freshman campaign and was honored as the SWAC Freshman of the Year for his performance.
During his debut for the Colorado Buffaloes last season, Travis Hunter showcased why he is considered to be a special talent and a future NFL superstar. One of the games that fired him up last year was during the Rocky Mountain rivalry clash against the Colorado State Rams on September 16.
A video posted on social media showcased some of the highlights from the highly energetic showdown that took place at Folsom Field. At the beginning of the video, we see Hunter getting into a heated argument with a few Colorado State players during warmups.
"You ain't nobody. You's a nobody," Travis Hunter said in the video.
Despite giving his all, Travis Hunter had to miss out most of the second quarter because of an illegal tackle that led to him being rushed to the hospital. Rams safety Henry Blackburn hit Hunter hard in the mid-section during the second half on the Colorado sideline. He suffered from a lacerated liver and was sidelined for the next three games.
However, Deion Sanders and his team clinched the victory despite Hunter's absence. The game dragged on to two overtimes where the Buffs emerged victorious with a 43-35 final score.
Ex-NFL GM shares honest take on Travis Hunter's playstyle
Former NFL General Manager Rick Spielman made an appearance on "NFL on CBS." On the show, he talked about the Colorado two-way star, stating that while he possesses impressive skills, he is still concerned in areas related to discipline and technique.
"He is a little bit, I don't want to call him gunslinger. He plays with some savvy but so undisciplined when he's honed in. He has the most unique ball skills of any of these corners we want to talk probably because of his receiving skills," Spielman said. "He got a little Deion in him. But I just thought he was really undisciplined with his technique and looks like he's out there playing street ball at times. But he's just a better athlete than everybody." (0:20 onwards)
Hunter was honored with the Paul Hornung Award during his debut campaign with the Buffs. It will be interesting to see how well he performs for Colorado in their new journey in the Big 12 this upcoming season.
