No. 14-ranked Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has been in the news ever since the college football selection committee announced the College Football Playoff field. The Rebels were not selected to compete and that angered Kiffin. He has expressed on Twitter several times that he thinks Ole Miss (9-3, 5-3 SEC) should have been included despite its three losses.
Lane Kiffin believes that since SEC teams have harder schedules, they should be more lenient in allowing them to qualify for the playoffs despite having a few losses. Additionally, he has been tweeting sarcastically after some of the first-round playoff games.
After the games on Saturday, where all the underdogs lost, Kiffin Tweeted:
"Way to keep us on the edge of our seats Committee... Riveting."
Analyst Joel Klatt responded:
"If your team played half as well as you tweet you would likely be in."
Joel Klatt spoke on "The Joel Klatt Show" on Sunday about his response to Lane Kiffin.
"Listen Lane, if you wanted to be in the playoff, you had your chance. In fact, you were in, my man. Like, you were in the playoff, and I love you, I love it, but you blew it. You lost a game you shouldn't have lost, so you weren't in the College Football Playoff, and that's what it is. I just didn't want to hear the whining. Not gonna take it back, not sorry I tweeted it."
"This idea that he was going to continue to play these hypothetical games, I just get frustrated. The easiest position to argue from is the position of a hypothetical because there's no proving you wrong. "Well we would've played better than that if we got a chance to do so." Oh ok."
"Where do you go with that? Other than, you didn't when you played Kentucky at home or Florida on the road when you're quarterback was crying in the fourth quarter. Like, those things happened. So, I don't know what to do with that. You can't argue with someone that always wants to play hypotheticals."
What caused Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels to miss the CFP?
Lane Kiffin has been persistent in saying Ole Miss should have made the CFP. However, there is good reason for the Rebels to miss out on the selection.
The Ole Miss Rebels lost three games this season, and it was difficult for such teams to reach the CFP. Additionally, two of the losses came to unranked opponents in Kentucky and Florida. To make matters worse, the Rebels lost to Florida in the second last game of the season and likely would have qualified if they won that game.
