Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders did not hesitate in letting his feelings known about two-way star Travis Hunters' abilities. Hunter had transferred from Jackson State to Colorado last season when Coach Prime and his sons joined the Buffs. Last season, he also won the Paul Hornung Award for his versatility on the field.
During an appearance on "Colorado Football Coaches Show" on Thursday, Deion Sanders talked about Travis Hunter's two-way abilities. He stated that despite what the critics and naysayers believe, Hunter can still play on both sides of the ball even after he goes pro in the NFL:
"How can you say what a person can't do just because you can't fathom it?," Coach Prime asked. "No one has seeen a guy go both ways like he (Travis Hunter) goes. Yes he can! That's what he does. That's all he knows. So how you gonna tell a man what he can't do? The scouts ask me everyday, 'what is he?'"
"I say, 'he's a football player.' If you put him on offense in the NFL and don't have him on defense, you are gonna look like a fool. Because he's gonna be the best defensive player not playing. And the same thing vice versa. So the best thing you can do is draft him to whatever position and have an package ready for him on the opposing side."
Hunter is definitely the greatest all-around talent in college football at the moment. His production on both offense and defense for Colorado has been phenomenal despite them going 4-8 last season. Thus one can understand why Coach Prime emphasizes Hunter being a two-way player, even in the NFL.
Coach Prime heaps praise on Travis Hunter after showdown against ND State
The Colorado Buffaloes began their Big 12 journey with a victory over ND State at home. Travis Hunter played an important role in the victory, leading the Buffs to a 31-26 victory.
After the game, Deion Sanders spoke about Hunter's performance during Tuesday's press conference. He praised Hunter's agility and stamina and talked about him being a key player on the roster for this season as well.
"Travis Hunter is Travis. 131 snaps. Showed no signs of tiring. He is who he is. He is the definition of HIM. 31 NFL scouts representing 19 teams on Thursday. Most scouts in attendance in CU history." (1:45 onwards)
The Buffs are now scheduled to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 2. Can Matt Rhule's team get their redemption following last season's defeat, or will Coach Prime and his team be able to continue their winning momentum?
