Nick Saban's daughter set the record straight amid tension between her father and comedian Shane Gillis. The Alabama Crimson Tide legend's daughter took to Instagram to give her two cents on the beef.
Kristian Saban posted a video of her father on her Instagram stories with the caption:
"@shanemgillis, at least one of us likes you."
Her move to tag Gillis in the post shows that she wants the comedian to be notified that the Saban family is aware of the back-and-forth.
What happened between Nick Saban and Shane Gillis?
During a playoff airing of ESPN's College GameDay, Shane Gillis was invited as a special guest. The comedian was having a swell time with the broadcast until he took a shot at Saban.
Gillis said, "It is not just the SEC; it is not just Coach Saban." The comedian spoke about the existence of NIL deals in modern college football and the relative level playing field. This was a thinly veiled dig at Saban, as there were rumors of the Alabama Crimson Tide and other big SEC schools paying players to attend their programs.
The joke clearly rattled coach Saban, but he took it in his stride during the broadcast. However, a couple of days later, during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," he said:
"I understand that Shane Gillis is a comedian, and he was trying to be funny. My daughter loves him, so at least somebody in our family likes the guy."
Saban's daughter is fully on board with her father's reaction, so seeing how the comedian responds will be interesting.
How did the Alabama Crimson Tide fare without Nick Saban
After Nick Saban's retirement, the Alabama Crimson Tide appointed Kalen DeBoer as head coach. DeBoer was fresh off an impressive spell with the Washington Huskies that saw him reach last season's college football championship game. Jim Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines beat the Huskies, but DeBoer earned major plaudits for his team's style of play.
Under DeBoer, the Crimson Tide recorded a 9-3 regular-season record. Their three losses saw them miss out on a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff. They still have a ReliaQuest Bowl game against the Michigan Wolverines to prepare for.
The Crimson Tide showed some promise under Kalen DeBoer's tutelage, but it felt different for fans with a different head coach at the helm. It'll be interesting to see how the team fairs while Saban proceeds in the broadcasting world in the coming years.
