The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have moved on to the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff and their transfer portal experience is quiet. Teams with losing records or poor seasons are seeing massive defections, but the Fighting Irish, as one of the last eight teams remaining, haven't had those kind of problems.
The 12-1 Irish are getting ready for a massive battle with Georgia after their domination of Indiana. They've spent precious little time worrying about the transfer portal, as the Irish have added just one player and have accounted for three players to be heading off the roster. Here's the story of their portal losses.
Notre Dame Transfer Portal Tracker: All players who have entered
Aidan Gobaira, Edge
When he finished high school in Virginia, Gobaira was a highly-regarded prospect. 247sports.com ranked him as a four-star prospect and he had his pick of a dozen-and-a-half or so power conference suitors. Gobaira picked the Irish without taking any official visits.
Gobaira has been around the program for three seasons but has had more injuries than playing time. He missed the 2023 season due to an ACL injury. The Irish had moved Gobaira to a medical scholarship, so by entering the portal, he is seeking to continue his playing career. He'll have two seasons of eligibility ahead.
Tyson Ford, DL
Ford was also a big-time recruit when he finished high school in Missouri. Another four-star standout, Ford's productivity was again hampered by nagging injuries. He also spent three seasons with the Irish but played just four games total, never making an impact.
As with Gobaira above, Notre Dame moved Ford to a medical scholarship, which would have ended his playing career. Instead, he entered the portal and has chosen the Cal Golden Bears, where he'll have two seasons left to play.
Jaden Mickey, CB
The most significant of Notre Dame's portal entrants, Mickey is another player who spent three seasons with the Irish. A big-time recruit from California, Mickey saw playing time as a true freshman, even starting a game. Mickey started two games as a sophomore and had a pick-six score in a win over Pittsburgh.
However, in 2024, Mickey decided, after seeing minimal action in the season's first four games, to opt out on the remainder of the season, so as to preserve his redshirt season for 2024. He did so and chose to transfer to California, where he'll have two remaining seasons of eligibility.
