The Oklahoma Sooners are struggling in their debut SEC campaign. In six games, they have managed to only put up a 4-3 (1-3 SEC conference record). Amid the struggles, the team's coaching staff decided to fire their offensive coordinator Seth Littrell.

Oklahoma Sooners' have underperformed on offense

After the team's Week 8 loss to South Carolina, the program announced that they are relieving Seth Littrell from his duties. Head coach Brent Venables said in a statement:

"Seth is an all-time great Sooner. He has a deep love for this university and football program, and has poured his heart and soul into it. Despite that, our performance as an offense this season has not at all lived up to the OU standard and I felt a change was necessary now," Venables said.

After Oklahoma lost to South Carolina, they ranked 128 nationally in total offense. They also ranked last in various offensive SEC categories such as yards per carry (3.1), yards per completion (9.8), and first down conversions (120).

Seth Littrell took over as the offensive coordinator when ex-Sooners OC Jeff Lebby left for Mississippi State last year. His contract was supposed to run through the 2026 season and he was set to earn $1.1 million this season.

Who will replace Seth Littrell as Oklahoma's new offensive coordinator?

Following Seth Littrell's dismissal, Oklahoma is promoting co-offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley as the interim OC. Apart from him, senior offensive analyst Kevin Johns has also been promoted as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the team for the rest of the season.

In his statement, Brent Venables talked about Joe Jon Finley and the expectations they have from him for the rest of the season.

"The leadership role Joe Jon plays on our team is critical. He has the confidence of our locker room and coaching staff, and I'm thankful to him for taking on this expanded role in the middle of the season," Venables said.

He added:

"I'm confident Joe Jon, Kevin and the rest of the offensive staff will work tirelessly to put our players in positions to succeed and make us more effective on that side of the ball."

Oklahoma is next scheduled to take on Ole Miss next week. It will be interesting to see if they can put an end to their two-game losing streak in week 9.
