The Old Brass Spittoon forms the basis of the Indiana- Michigan State rivalry. This rivalry comprises of the teams of the Indiana Hoosiers of Indiana University Bloomington and Michigan State Spartans of Michigan State University. Both these teams compete in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Sundivision (FBS) and are also members of the Big Ten Conference. These teams compete for the Old Brass Spittoon trophy.

The Old Brass Spittoon was introduced in 1950, when it was purchased for $50 from an antiques shop by Gene McDermott. It was used to motivate Michigan State ahead of their game against Indiana. Eventually, the old brass spittoon was decided as the trophy to be presented to the winners of the Indiana-Michigan State rivalry. The award has been given to either of the two teams every year depending on their performance.

What is the rivalry between Indiana and Michigan State called?

The rivalry between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Michigan State Spartans is called The Battle for the Old Brass Spittoon. This is because both teamns compete for winning the trophy since it was first introduced in 1950. Notably, Michigan State were the first recipients of the Old Brass Spittoon trophy on November 4, 1950, when they defeated Indiana 35-0. However, Indiana received their first share of the Old Brass Spittoon trophy on November 8, 1958 by defeating Michigan State 6-0.

The Indiana-Michigan State rivalry has been continuing for 71 years since the teams first faced off in 1922. In the first encounter on October 28, 1922, Indiana defeated Michigan State 14-6. However, Michigan State bounced back and won their first game on November 4, 1950 by defeating Indiana with a score of 35-0.
