When news of Nick Saban's retirement broke on Jan. 10, many individuals expected Dan Lanning to replace the 7-time national champ. However, Lanning didn't waste time reaffirming this to his current players and the recruits wanting to commit to Oregon.
Less than 24 hours later, the Oregon coach posted a video to announce his loyalty to the program and dismiss all the rumors. Following his DB coaching gig at Sam Houston, Lanning downgraded to graduate assistant at Alabama. He wanted to learn from the "GOAT" alongside talent powerhouses like Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin and more.
During an interview with Joel Klatt, Lanning recalled learnings from his time working under Saban:
"I think the schedule, the way that he was able to map out the day, what was important, what wasn't important, his ability to go back and assess anything that we did, and then quality control that, you know, how can we make this better next time? And that's where I think you consistently saw the improvement."
"The other thing that really stuck out to me about Coach Saban and even coach Smart, is their ability to learn from anyone, you know, if somebody had something that can make their program or organization, better, they wanted to know it. It didn't mean they've always incorporated, but they went, you know, what that involved?" (3:15)
Dan Lanning shows faith in Dillon Gabriel in 2024
Former Oklahoma star Dillon Gabriel is preparing to play with Oregon for the first time. He is among the most hyped-up players ahead of the upcoming college football season.
Gabriel started his collegiate journey at UCF but later entered the transfer portal after starting for two years with the program in 2019 and 2020.
In 2023, the Sooners' starting quarterback had a successful run. He scored 30 touchdowns and six interceptions and threw 3,660 yards. During an interview, Lanning explained how Dillon Gabriel is going to replace Bo Nix at Oregon:
"It’s so fun because I would tell you that Dillon is so different than Bo, who we just had. He’s a guy that really cares about people. He’s tied into the managers on the team and whoever the janitor is walking around the hallway, the other players. When he walks in a room he’s interested in you, he wants to know about you"
Fans will want to see how Lanning's Oregon navigates into the Big Ten.
