Payton Thorne, born on June 26, 2001, is an American college football quarterback who played with Michigan State for four seasons before transferring to Auburn in 2023. He was a three-star recruit coming out of Naperville Central High School where he began playing high school football. In his entire high school career including his brief spell at Metea Valley, Thorne put up solid numbers, including 7,008 passing yards and 83 touchdowns, with 1,035 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. As a senior, he received the 2018 USA Today Illinois Offensive Player of the Year award.

The former three-star quarterback committed to Michigan State after originally committing to play for Western Michigan University in 2019. Thorne also held offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Kent State, Central Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, and Illinois among others. Thorne redshirted his freshman season before taking up a backup role in four games in the following season in 2020. In his sophomore season, Thorne threw for a school-record 27 touchdowns in a single season. Following the 2022 season, Thorne entered the transfer portal and committed to the Auburn Tigers to finish the final two years of collegiate eligibility. Last season, the Naperville native earned the starting role at Auburn and recorded 1,755 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The quarterback from Auburn signed his first NIL deal back in 2022. On August 1, 2022, Payton Thorne signed his first Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with HopCat which is a Michigan-based restaurant and beer bar.
