Payton Thorne is an American college football player who will play his final season of college football with the Auburn Tigers. Thorne started his football career at Mete Valley High School before transferring to Naperville Central High School where he was ranked the top quarterback in the state of Illinois. During his three-year prep career, Thorne passed for 7,008 yards and 8 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,035 yards and 14 touchdowns. Thorne was ranked the No.16 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by 247Sports and was named 2018 Illinois Offensive Player of the Year by USA TODAY. The three-star prospect from Naperville began his collegiate football career with Michigan State Spartans after originally committing to play for Western Michigan University. He also held offers from top programs like Central Michigan, Kent State, NC State, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Penn State, and Purdue.

Thorne redshirted his first season at Michigan State as he did not see any action. In 2020 as a redshirt freshman, Thorne recorded 582 passing yards in four games at quarterback. His breakthrough campaign was in 2021 and 2022 when he was named the team captain in both these years and earned his role as the starting quarterback. Following the 2022 regular season, Thorne decided to transfer to Auburn Tigers where he would spend his remaining two years of eligibility. In his four-year spell with the Spartans, Thorne recorded 6,494 passing yards with 49 career touchdowns in 29 career games. Last season, Thorne was also the starting quarterback at Auburn and caught heavy criticism after passing for only 1,755 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Naperville native enters his second season with the Tigers and would like to build on his last season’s numbers.
