The biggest bowl games are finally here, and make sure the Peach Bowl is on the list of the very biggest. Since its founding in 1968, the game has taken place in Atlanta and matched up with a couple of top programs. Notably, three times in the modern College Football Playoff era, the game has served as a national semifinal.

Here's more Peach Bowl history ahead of this year's battle between the Arizona State Sun Devils and Texas Longhorns.

While the Peach Bowl's lineage in 1968 doesn't make it one of the oldest bowl games, it was the first-ever bowl game established for charitable purposes. The game was started as a fundraiser for the Lions Club, a charitable service organization. The game moved from Grant Field (then home of Georgia Tech) to Fulton County Stadium (then home of the Atlanta Braves).

In 1993, the Peach Bowl moved to the Georgia Dome and since 2017, it's been at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with both venues being home of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Historically, the Peach Bowl often pitted an SEC team against an ACC team.

Notable matchups in Peach Bowl history

1979: No. 19 Baylor vs. No. 18 Clemson

This was the first Peach Bowl with a battle of two ranked teams. Baylor nabbed a 24-18 victory over a resilient Clemson team.

2016: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Washington

The first CFP semifinal for the Peach Bowl, this was a massive game. Washington scored first, but Alabama rolled 24-7. The Tide outrushed the Huskies 269 yards to 44. Bo Scarbrough had 180 yards and two touchdowns for Alabama, but QB Jalen Hurts struggled, which turned out to be a preview of the upcoming national title game with Clemson.

2019: No. 1 LSU vs. No. 4 Oklahoma

Joe Burrow and LSU crushed Oklahoma in another semifinal game. The Tigers ended up with 692 total yards in a 63-28 victory. Oklahoma's QB in this game? Jalen Hurts, who rushed for two touchdowns, but couldn't play defense, which was the key here. LSU went on to win the national title.

2022: No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 4 Ohio State

Ohio State led 38-24 starting the fourth quarter and seemed driven to destroy the idea that the SEC owns the Buckeyes in big games. Until Georgia rallied and claimed a 42-41 win on a last-minute drive from QB Stetson Bennett, who hit Adonai Mitchell from 10 yards out for the win. Georgia went on to win the title easily over TCU.

Arizona State vs. Texas: Head-to-head

Arizona State and Texas have only met once before. The Longhorns took down the Sun Devils 52-34 in the 2007 Holiday Bowl. Neither school has much history in the Peach Bowl, with Texas making its first appearance. Arizona State has a 1-0 mark in the game heading in, winning the 1970 game over North Carolina by a 48-26 margin.

The Longhorns are 12.5-point favorites, the largest point spread on any of the upcoming CFP quarterfinal games.
