Purdue vs Illinois: Preview

Purdue is a 19-point underdog on the road against Illinois. The over/under is set at 49 points.

Purdue has struggled mightily this season, with four straight losses after winning its season opener against Indiana State. In their last loss to Wisconsin, Purdue struggled on both offense and defense. After the game, Boilermakers coach Ryan Walters said his team is just bad.

"The most disappointing thing is, if I'm being completely honest, we're a bad football team right now," Walters said, via SI. "We're not disciplined when it gets tight, we play with poor technique when it's our turn to make a play, we get sloppy when we have to do things to make up ground. So, yeah, we've got a lot to think about on Sunday."

Since winning 49-0 in its season opener, Purdue has been outscored 184-44 in the four games since.

The Boilermakers have been led by Hudson Card who has thrown for 738 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. Defensively, Kyndrich Breedlove has two picks, Kydran Jenkins has 3.5 sacks, and Dillon Theineman leads the team with 42 tackles.

Illinois, meanwhile, is coming off its open week and lost its last game to Penn State on the road. The offense struggled against the Nittany Lions as quarterback Luke Altmyer threw for just 185 yards, a touchdown, and a pick.

Despite the frustrating loss, Illinois coach Brett Bielema said he still believes his team is still good.

"I felt on the plane ride coming over I thought we had a good football team," Bielema said, via SI. "I just told them we feel about where we're at but we can't do the [bad] things... We can't do the things that cause us to fail ... We can't beat the No. 9 in the country with first and goal at the 2 and come away with zero points. It just doesn't add up."

Illinois is led by quarterback Altmyer who has thrown for 1,047 yards, 11 touchdowns, and a pick. Kaden Feagin has rushed for 306 yards and three touchdowns.

Xavier Scott has three interceptions, Gabe Jacas leads the team with three sacks, and Matthew Bailey has 32 tackles.

Illinois is still one of the top teams in the Big Ten and the Fighting Illini should cruise to a lopsided win here. Purdue's defense is a major problem as Altmyer should carve up the defense and get back on track with a big win here.

Prediction: Illinois 34, Purdue 10
