The early season has not been kind to Big Ten stalwarts Wisconsin and Purdue. The Badgers are 2-2 after losing not only the game but starting QB Tyler Van Dyke in their Week 3 loss to Alabama. Meanwhile, Purdue is 1-3 and has been outscored in their last three games 132-38.
Purdue vs. Wisconsin: Score prediction for Week 6
Purdue has been adequate offensively, scoring 21.8 points per game, but is getting shredded for 33 ppg defensively. Opponents are averaging 5.5 yards per carry against the Boilermakers and Purdue does not have an interception on the season. Purdue is the only team in FBS football to have not yet forced a turnover this season.
Wisconsin is similarly so-so on offense, averaging 21.5 ppg, but they're giving up a more respectable 26.8 ppg. Still, their defense has allowed opponents to convert over 46% of third-down opportunities, which is next to worst in the Big Ten. The loss of Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke to a season-ending injury has hampered Wisconsin's big-play ability on offense.
Score Prediction: Wisconsin 28, Purdue 17
Purdue vs. Wisconsin: Point spread
The Badgers are a 12-point home favorite. The modest over/under of 44.5 suggests that experts are contemplating either a strong defensive performance or two offenses that will shoot themselves in the foot for much of the afternoon. Either is plausible.
Purdue vs. Wisconsin: Betting tips
With Purdue's inconsistent offensive output, there's a +295 bet that no Boilermaker player will score a touchdown. On the other hand, for optimistic Purdue fans, running back Devin Mockobee, who played well last time out, is +1100 to score Purdue's first touchdown.
On the Wisconsin side, Vinny Anthony made two big plays last week, with a 63-yard TD catch and a 74-yard kick return. Anthony is a +850 bet to score the first Wisconsin touchdown and is worth contemplation.
