Following his shocking exit from the UNLV football program in September, Matthew Sluka has now officially entered the transfer portal. The quarterback is seeking to continue his career somewhere else following the fallout with the Rebels this season.
In September, Sluka stunned the college football community by announcing his decision to leave UNLV after he had earned the starting role. According to Sluka and his family, the departure was prompted by the failure to receive a promised $100,000 in NIL (name, image and likeness) compensation.
Matthew Sluka received a lot of criticism within the college football world following his decision in September. The quarterback has once again been ripped up by fans following his latest move to enter the transfer portal. Here's a look at some of the reactions online.
Other reaction to Sluka entering the transfer portal:
"UNLV hasn't really missed a beat without him," a fan wrote.
"His team is even better now," another fan wrote.
"He played himself," a fan commented.
"His career is most likely over," another fan commented.
UNLV addressed Matthew Sluka’s exit
After Matthew Sluka announced his departure from UNLV, the university's athletic department issued a statement to clarify the situation. While Sluka alleged that a NIL agreement went unfulfilled, UNLV countered by stating that his representatives had made improper demands.
"Football player Matthew Sluka's representative made financial demands upon the University and its NIL collective in order to continue playing. UNLV Athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law. UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats," UNLV Athletics said in a statement.
"UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka. UNLV has conducted its due diligence and will continue to operate its programs within the framework of NCAA rules and regulations, as well as Nevada state laws."
Blue Sprints Sports, the organization managing UNLV's NIL collective, also issued a statement following Sluka’s exit. The collective emphasized that no NIL agreement had ever been made with the freshman quarterback during his recruitment process.
Nick Saban also criticized Matthew Sluka’s decision
Nick Saban has been one of the critics of the modern development in the college football world. In his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” in September, the legendary coach raised concerns about the ethics surrounding Matthew Sluka's decision.
“The way we are right now where everybody’s a consistent free agent” Saban said. “You don’t have any contract, you don’t have any responsibility or obligation to your team.”
“I don’t know the player at UNLV that’s opting out, what kind of value is he really creating for his future, based on what he’s doing. I don’t know that he really is. And how does it affect his teammates? And what’s everybody else’s in the country going to think of what he’s doing?
Sluka's decision has heightened the urgency for a more regulated NIL framework in college athletics, a cause that Nick Saban is actively advocating for. The former Alabama coach has met with the congress at The Capitol to discuss this needed changes in college athletics.
