Rice vs. Memphis: Preview
Rice is a 9.5-point underdog on the road, while the over/under is set at 52.5 points.
The Owls beat Navy to snap their two-game losing streak. Rice got out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, and it cruised to the win after that.
The game had over five hours of delays due to lightning, and Rice interim head coach Pete Alamar was looking for his first win. The interim coach was pleased with the team's effort.
“We came out of a 5-hour and 6-minute rain delay and hit the ground going 100 miles an hour,” Alamar said, via UnderdogDynasty. “We talked all week about playing fast and playing free, and one of the big goals for us was having good eye discipline in all three phases.
"We needed to be able to track our targets on offense, and defensively, when you’re playing a flexbone team that can throw the ball well, to be able to have the eye discipline that we had tonight is a statement to our players and talks about how well our coaching staff prepared them.”
Rice has been led by E.J. Warner, who has thrown for 1,812 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Dean Connors has rushed for 623 yards and eight touchdowns, while Matt Sykes has 49 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns.
Defensively, the Owls are led by Gabriel Taylor and Tyson Flowers has two interceptions, while Ty Morris has four sacks and 46 tackles.
On the other hand, Memphis is coming off a 44-36 road loss to UTSA, snapping its four-game winning streak. The loss ended any hopes of the Tigers winning the Group of Five bid for the College Football Playoff.
"Always put it on me," coach Ryan Silverfield said in his postgame news conference, via Yahoo. "And when you write your articles, put it on me. But clearly we weren't ready. We didn't execute.
"I'm really, really frustrated because every single person in the organization is to blame. This is one of those. I'm blaming everybody. And everybody has to understand we're in a results business, and we have to do a better job. We have to go out there and find a way."
The Tigers are led by Seth Henigan, who threw for 2,532 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Mario Anderson Jr. has rushed for 833 yards and 14 touchdowns, and Roc Taylor has 658 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Memphis is coming off a disappointing loss to UTSA, as the Tigers should come out strong here and get out to an early lead. Expect a motivated Memphis team as the Tigers will blow out Rice at home.
Prediction: Memphis 34, Rice 21
