Riley Leonard plays as a quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and is a senior in the 2024-25 season. Leonard is a native of Fairhope, Alabama, and graduated from Fairhope High School. He had a remarkable high school career at Fairhope, as a senior, he threw for 1,900 yards for 25 touchdowns and rushed 500 yards. Leonard was a three-star recruit by ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals. He was positioned as the No. 14 by Rivals and the No. 20 dual-threat quarterback by 247Sports in the nation. Leonard led the team to an overall record of 31-12 and earned all-state honors during his final season. Leonard was labeled as the Class 7A Player of the Year and the AL Coastal Player of the Year after leading the Pirates to a 27-2 record. During high school, Leonard also played basketball and was one of five players on the Super All-State Basketball Team.
Riley Leonard transferred to Notre Dame in 2024 after playing three seasons at Duke Blue Devils. In 2024, Leonard led Notre Dame as the team captain and earned a selection in the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List.
