Defensive lineman Ronald Triplette is leaving the UTSA Roadrunners after three seasons. UTSA had another good season and earned eligibility to compete in a bowl game for the fifth year. Despite the team's success, On3 Pete Nakos reported on Tuesday that Triplette's agency, the Jordan Sports Group, said he is entering the transfer portal.
UTSA (6-6, 4-4 American Athletic Conference) ended its regular season with a 29-24 loss to the No. 24 Army Black Knights (10-1, 8-0) in Week 14 on Nov. 30. The Roadrunners led 17-16 at the end of the third quarter. Their defense couldn't prevent Army from scoring 13 points in the fourth to win the game.

Triplette finished the last game on UTSA's regular schedule with four tackles. He ended the season with 23 total tackles (10 solo), including four sacks, and two forced fumbles. The edge rusher had the second-most sacks on his team behind linebacker Jimmori Robinson, who had 10.5. Triplette also tied for the most fumble recoveries with Robinson and linebacker Jamal Ligon.
The decision to leave the Roadrunners may lead to him performing better with a new program next year.
Here are three potential landing spots for the defensive lineman.
#1, Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) are having their best season since 2009 and will play in their fourth consecutive bowl game. On Saturday, the Red Raiders had a dominant 52-15 victory against the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-6, 5-4). While Texas Tech has enjoyed a successful year, it may try to acquire Triplette to improve its defense for next season.
One key area where the team could benefit from signing Triplette is the ability to have more sacks. That's an area where Texas Tech's defensive lineman struggled with this season. He also had more total tackles and forced fumbles than all players in his position for the Red Raiders.
If the edge rusher joins Texas Tech, its defense could improve to be among the best in the conference.
#2, West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia may try to make some defensive changes to increase its chances of having a better record next year. The team earned eligibility to compete in a bowl game after defeating the Cincinnati Bearcats on Nov. 9 to get their sixth win. The Mountaineers will compete against the No. 25 Memphis Tigers (10-2) in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on Dec. 17.
West Virginia may still have defensive linemen like Fatorma Mulbah, T.J. Jackson and Hammond Russell IV returning for next season. All three have done well for the team's defense, with Jackson standing out with 6.5 sacks.
The Mountaineers' addition of Triplette would help strengthen the defense, allowing them to compete against other top Big 12 teams.
#3, Wake Forest Demon Deacons
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (4-8, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) were among the worst teams in their conference, ending the year on a four-game losing streak. Their last matchup was a 23-17 defeat to the Duke Blue Devils (9-3, 5-3 ACC) on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons have struggled defensively, with seven of their losses due to opponents scoring over 30 points. Triplette's addition may not be enough to increase their winning percentage next year. However, he could contribute to Wake Forest, preventing other teams from overwhelming the Deacons.
