April's NFL draft will feature a handful of intriguing names at the top. Colorado's Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, won't have to wait long for league commissioner Roger Goodell to call his name.
Former Cleveland Browns running back Leroy Hoard believes that, if Hunter is still there when Cleveland makes its selection at No. 2, the Browns shouldn't hesitate.
"I would take Travis Hunter," Hoard said Wednesday on "Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show." "Unless you are absolutely sold on a quarterback, I hate when teams have a top-five pick and everybody says they need a quarterback, so they draft a quarterback.
"And he may not be the right quarterback for you, but you needed a quarterback, and then he struggles and you go through the whole process again."
The Browns haven't owned a first-round pick since 2021 thanks to their trade for Deshaun Watson. It was reported Friday that Watson ruptured his Achilles again after doing so during the season.
Jameis Winston (2-5 as a starter), Dorian Thompson-Robinson (0-2) and Bailey Zappe (0-1) all cycled in at quarterback after Watson's season-ending injury. Still, Hoard doesn't think Cleveland should draft a passer just because.
"I would rather start drafting guys in supporting roles, and then when I really like a quarterback, go get him," Hoard later added.
Watson's predecessor, Baker Mayfield, was Cleveland's most recent top-five pick, in 2018. However, Mayfield is the only quarterback the Browns have taken in the top five this century. Their other top-five choices include Myles Garrett (2017), Trent Richardson (2012), Joe Thomas (2007), Braylon Edwards (2005), Gerard Warren (2001) and Courtney Brown (2000).
Why Travis Hunter would be an exciting addition
As a two-way player for the Buffaloes, Travis Hunter was arguably college football's most noteworthy player this season. He became the first player ever to earn both the Bednarik Award and Biletnikoff Award, which go to the most outstanding defensive player and receiver in the nation, respectively.
Travis Hunter also beat out Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty for the sport's stiff-arming statue.
"It kinda showed me what I can do when I'm fully locked in," Hunter said Wednesday on his podcast, "The Travis Hunter Show." "It's definitely something I'll look back on and (be) like, 'Daing, I got all these trophies that I didn't know of that I knew I could reach, but I didn't know to a certain extent that I would get all the ones I wanted to get.'"
