Now-former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck spun around Thursday and chose to transfer to Miami rather than enter April's NFL draft. The news was surprising from Beck's standpoint, many thought.
Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson feels the development is a head-scratcher for whoever assessed Beck's worth as an addition.
"Whoever those evaluators are, they need to get their eyes checked," Johnson said on the "Nightcap" podcast posted on YouTube on Saturday.
His co-host, Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe, is just as unimpressed by Carson Beck, who threw nine interceptions over a four-game span this season with the Bulldogs. Georgia lost a pair of regular season games with him operating its attack.
"He was another one," Sharpe said. "'Oh, (if) he comes out, he's gonna be a top five pick! Quinn Ewers, he's ready! Better than Shedeur (Sanders), he's ready!' I'm like, 'Damn!'"
Johnson contends that Beck's success stemmed from those he had playing around him. The Hurricanes don't match up to the Bulldogs in terms of offensive weaponry, although they still do have impressive talent.
"(They) do have some guys that can make some plays, I will tell you that," Johnson said. "It's not the Hurricanes of the old, where no matter what position you go to, we were talking about first-rounders, five stars. ... It's still Miami. It's still the Hurricanes.
"Beck is gonna have to come in, he's gonna have to improve, and do some of the things that Cam Ward was able to do. Cam Ward was able to elevate the players around him."
Analyzing Carson Beck
Shannon Sharpe dubbed Carson Beck as "a turnover machine" and wondered aloud if Miami saw him play this season. He also pointed out that Carson Beck is recovering from an elbow injury suffered in the SEC Championship Game against Texas.
Johnson was assured that, if the Hurricanes were willing to shell out a truckload of money for Beck, the injury wouldn't be a factor. Then, he asked if it was Beck's throwing elbow. He scrunched his face upon learning it was.
"Eh," Johnson said, keeping the twisted expression. "I don't know."
Sharpe believes that Carson Beck "saw the writing on the wall" after not performing as well this year as he had the year before. Gunner Stockton, assumedly next up for Georgia, started the College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl.
Johnson chalked up Beck's payday and relocation in part to having played at an elite college football program, which would likely lead some to believe he's got what it takes to lift a team to success.
"But, Ocho, $4 million for him? Ugh," Sharpe said. "I don't begrudge nobody getting the money. Hey, if y'all gonna pay it, I'm taking it, too."
