In an up-and-down year, the Virginia Tech Hokies finally clinched bowl eligibility thanks to a 37-17 home victory over the rival Virginia Cavaliers in Week 14. With the win, the Hokies ended the season with a 6-6 record, just enough to earn a spot in a bowl game.

Virginia Tech (6-6, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) finished 8th in the ACC, and while they may not gather consideration for any of the major bowl games, they should still make a second consecutive postseason trip. Last year, the Hokies defeated Tulane in the Military Bowl.

Exploring the most likely scenario for Virginia Tech

The 2024 season has been plagued by inconsistency in Blacksburg. The Hokies opened the season with a 27-34 loss at Vanderbilt but got back to their winning ways, beating Marshall and Old Dominion in consecutive games.

The two-game winning streak was then halted as Virginia Tech lost two straight, including a highly controversial, last-second loss to the No. 7-ranked Miami Hurricanes, as officials overturned what had initially been called as a game-winning touchdown catch by Da’Quan Felton as time had expired.

But following the loss at Miami, the Hokies won three straight conference games, setting them up for a stretch run in play for a berth in the ACC title game at 5-3 (3-1 in the ACC).

However, the wheels came off after that, as Virginia Tech dropped three straight conference games. First was a road overtime loss to Syracuse, followed by a 14-24 home defeat to Clemson and a road loss to Duke.

With bowl eligibility on the line, Virginia Tech got past Virginia at home to secure bowl eligibility. While the expectations were higher in Blacksburg, making it back to a bowl game might help ease the blow of finishing the regular season at .500, including 0-2 against ranked opponents.

After finishing regular season play, the most common projections have the Hokies traveling to Boston to take place in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on December 28, where they would face an opponent from the American Athletic Conference, most likely Tulane, East Carolina or even Memphis, depending in part on the Green Wave’s result in the AAC Championship Game.

Other destinations that have been mentioned for the Hokies are the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. The Hokies will know their bowl destination this Sunday, December8 , at noon ET.
